Artist Statement:

Art imitates Life, Life imitates Art!  In either case both are true and both are lies.  Does that mean that truth is always good?  Does that mean that lies are always bad?  In each case the answer is, "No, of course not."  Sometimes truth is good, sometimes lies are bad.  Often times what is truth and what are lies are only points of perspective.  Occasionally, when one questions absolute truth, one finds a nest of lies.  Once in a while an amazing lie will turn out to be a wonderful truth.  Such has been and continues to be my Art & Life dilemma, a predicament of interesting questions and contradictions.

Everyone knows a lot about art, at least most people think they do.  Every aspect of everyone's life is saturated with art.  We wear, drive, eat, clean, read and sometimes even create art.  With the affluence of our society you cannot experience anything without also getting a flood of either natural or person-made art.  Some of it is even fairly good, some of it isn't.  I know I have created some art that isn't "fairly good."  What has become the value of art?  It seems that, with so much that is mass produced very quickly, that which is created by one is somehow trivialized, or at least not very valuable.  Why do I create art?  Because it is the form of communication that I can utilize to my fullest.  I speak the language.

I believe that an artist needs to be fearless, knowing that art work will be lost and ruined.  I like to tell students (any myself) ,"The thing to know is when you've done enough, before you've done too much."  Still, sometimes work has to be pushed beyond a good time to stop, hence ruined work.  Yet, that is not the only fear an artist has to deal with.  One needs to accept rejection, time and again.  Worse that is in indifference.
